Elderly Man Found Dead By Search & Rescue

Unfortunately, an elderly man was found dead by Search & Rescue crews on Thursday in Mt. Rainier National Park, after he did not return overnight from a hike at Mazama Ridge.

Mazama Ridge is in the Paradise area. The article mentions that he was very familiar with hiking in this area, and had left a note for family members where he would be going. He did not return when expected, so S&R was sent to find him. It’s also mentioned that he did bring the typical 10 essentials.

This should serve as a reminder that regardless of any measures you take, there is still an inherent danger with hiking or climbing in the conditions presented within the Park. This should not discourage anyone from exploring our beautiful area, but please use all opportunities possible to go prepared, notify a friend/family member of hiking plans including a timeline, and to always exercise caution in the wilderness.

Here is a list of the 10 essentials as well:

  1. Navigation (Map with Compass/GPS)
  2. Sun protection (glasses, sunscreen, hat)
  3. Extra clothing for dryness/warmth, including rain gear
  4. Flashlight/headlamp AND extra batteries
  5. First Aid Kit/Supplies
  6. Fire source (waterproof matches/lighter)
  7. Gear/tool repair kit
  8. EXTRA food
  9. EXTRA water
  10. Emergency Shelter

Unfortunately some events like this are unavoidable, but awareness and preparedness are proven methods to save lives.

Know where you’re going, check trail conditions and weather ahead  of time, and always notify somebody of your whereabouts.
